When I was a few minutes post college, living in a 2 bedroom, Lincoln Park flat with 5 room mates eating peanut butter or oatmeal for every meal and sleeping in the living room, on a futon mattress (which I had to roll up and shove to the side every morning) My disassociating 'dolls' of choice, were home decor catalogs.
I'm talking pharmaceutical grade, glossy, slick images. two page spreads, perfectly styled making anyone browsing, feel as though they could crawl into the vignette and start mixing cocktails at their 'ebony' finished bar, or laying around reading the paper in bed with your dog on beautiful linens or cooking up dinner with chic and fabulous friends using matching dishes! With coordinating cutlery!
So smitten was I, I actual interviewed for a job in C&B's table top division. But because I was a lazy-assed 21 year old who still believed that weekends were for sleeping in and hanging out looking cute at Oak St. beach, I declined the job offer. ("who'd want to work retail hours? I need a tan. Cute NWestern guys, blah blah balh" pleh. If only I could sit her down and give her a stern talking to. )
Back then, there were not a lot of these, but Crate & Barrel was always there to fix my jonez. This would be my future . If I could dream, it could be.
