going to my happy place

We spent the weekend up in San Francisco. My childhood friend is having a baby and so we all got together to celebrate this new little life.

Nick and I stayed at Cavallo Point, which is the old Fort Baker military base that's been turned into a 'luxury spa' and lodge.

When my girls were little ones, I would take them over to the Bay Area Discovery Museum which sits adjacent to the hotel property. I'd, longingly, peer into the windows of the empty military housing, imagining what it would have been like to live there, under the Golden Gate bridge, with a view of the city lights. Rumor has it that a huge Marriott was to be built on this property destroying the charm of these red roofed houses. Thankfully, this didn't happen and the houses have been turned into hotel rooms-the charm has been maintained.

I recommend staying here if you get a chance. The service is impeccable and the food, as always in SF, is an experience in epicurean perfection.

fennel, apple salad, wrapped in cucumbers with a juniper, citrus vinaigrette + smoked shrimp

we took a cooking class on Friday and learned how to make burgers the right way (grind your own meat is the first step) lots of prep work. Not sure if I have the patience to do this at home in the galley kitchen.

The Saturday was a gloriously sunny day so we opted to take the Ferry over to SF

However a flukey storm opened up the skies to an hour of downpour. Which was a great excuse to shop.

Cole and Son wallpaper at Kate Spade. You can't tell from this photo, but the background is a pale blue.  I feel like I may need to use this some place......

We walked through North Beach in the rain and decided to take cover in a corner bistro.

Storm passed and we were back out on the street.

Peter and Paul Church, after the storm.  I know, back to the beach..... Summer is here!
